"Sweet Sorrow" - Magpie with Cherry Blossoms
"Sweet Sorrow" takes its title from the old superstitious magpie rhyme “one for sorrow” - a sign of a bad omen or unwelcome visitor. But having cared for and hand-reared an orphaned magpie when I was younger, I have always seen a sweeter, more cheerful and charming side of their charactor - far from a sorrowful experience!

In this painting, I wanted to set their misunderstood reputation against something softer: the bright cherry blossom, fresh greens, and lightness of spring - to reflect the bright and affectionate charactor I have always associated with them.

Painted in August 2025 this original artwork forms part of my ongoing exploration of British Birds.

Open with care and handle your artwork with clean, dry hands and avoid touching the painted surface. Ideally use cotton gloves for added safety.
Keep your artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture, strong heat sources and sudden temperature changes.
If framing, use good quality materials and UV-protective glazing where possible.
Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Do not use water, cleaners, or solvents on the artwork.

With simple care, your painting will retain its colour, surface and character for years to come.

Independent wildlife rescue centres do an extraordinary amount of work, often with limited funding and constant operational demands. Their work is not only caring for injured, orphaned or vulnerable animals; it is also about the running of the centre itself, supporting and training staff and volunteers, managing supplies and keeping everything operational with each seasonal demand.

Having spent time working with a local wildlife rescue I know from direct experience how much care and commitment this takes. Supporting these centres is one small way my artwork can give something back to the wildlife, habitats and people who continue to inspire it.
